Management Team
Greg Baden
Greg has over 42 years of experience in the energy business, the majority of which has been associated with natural gas and electricity. Prior to setting up BECL and Associates Ltd. (BECL) in 2006, Greg worked for Shell Trading/Coral Energy, the global marketing and trading arm of the Royal Dutch Shell Group, in a business development role as Vice President for Power in Canada. Greg was responsible for power business development including the overseeing Shell’s commercial interests in a 550 MW natural-gas-fired combined cycle generating facility in Ontario and the purchase of electric power to support Shell energy marketing efforts in Alberta and Ontario.
BECL over the past 16 years has focused primarily on the Alberta and Ontario electricity and natural gas markets. Working for consumers, suppliers, and market agencies BECL has undertaken a variety of studies and projects ranging from investigations into the integration of energy storage technologies, to analyzing the commercial viability of new natural-gas-fired electricity generating capacity. More recently, Greg and BECL completed a study of the technical, economic and market risks and benefits associated with converting the existing coal-fired generating facilities to natural gas.
He graduated in 1977 from the University of Calgary with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Nahid Naini
Understanding business is at the core of Nahid Naini’s career spanning over 37 years as an analyst and successful administrator in the competitive worlds of aviation and energy. Trained in mathematics, statistics, and Finance and fluent in three languages, Nahid is recognized for her ability to analyze complex business problems. Nahid Naini has been a vital member of the team at BECL since 2007.
Nahid has played key roles in projects ranging from evaluating the performance of energy markets, developing typical meteorological year data sets to support solar energy developments, a comparative analysis of the forecast and actual financial performance of combined heat power project, analyzing the performance of wind power projects, assessing the energy consumption of industrial clients, to evaluating the economic viability of converting coal-fired generating facilities to natural gas.
Nahid Naini is a graduate of Dalhousie University (B.Sc. Mathematics and Statistics 1979) and the University of Calgary (M.B.A. Finance 1983).
F. R. (Frank) Bajc
Frank has over 32 years of experience in energy business and project development, construction, commissioning and plant operations in power plant, oil sands, petro-chemical facilities and refineries. In addition to a strong construction and operating skill set he has been successful with setting and executing innovative business strategies within complex environments. He has participated as a senior member of development and construction teams that have closed on over 3,500 MWs representing $4 billion in new thermal and renewable energy projects in domestic and foreign energy markets, over the past 17 years .
His current projects include a 200 MW gas turbine facility fired with renewable carbon neutral fuel, a first of its kind facility for North America, and a thermal generating project that includes a high voltage transmission project and potentially the repowering of a large coal fired generating facility. Immediately prior to these projects, Frank was the Executive Director of Engineering and Construction for a client in an overseas 1,200 MW coal fired facility. More recently, Frank along with BECL and Associates Ltd. completed a study of the technical and economic risks and benefits associated with converting the existing coal-fired generating facilities in Alberta to natural gas.
